Vaya Health rinde homenaje al Día de los Veteranos con un renovado compromiso de servicio, conexión y atención a la población veterana de Carolina del Norte

ASHEVILLE, NC - As Veterans Day approaches, Vaya Health joins communities across North Carolina in honoring those who have worn the uniform and continue to serve their neighbors, families, and communities. It is part of Vaya’s mission to support North Carolina veterans through expanded care coordination, behavioral health services, and community partnerships that strengthen access to care when and where it is needed most.

“I know first-hand that Vaya respects veterans and our service to the country,” said Frank Jurovich, who has been at Vaya for 11 years and is currently Senior Associate General Counsel. “After I spent seven years in the Marine Corps, it was great to come to a workplace that shares the same values as I do and helps veterans here in North Carolina.”

Every day, hundreds of North Carolina veterans reach out for help with housing, employment, benefits, and behavioral health needs. Through Vaya’s partnership with NCServes, those requests are fulfilled. As a statewide coordinated network, NCServes managed by Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM) with support from the Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos de Carolina del Norte –brings together public, private, and nonprofit organizations to ensure veterans, service members, and their families can easily connect to local support.

Operating through a secure referral platform, NCServes has helped nearly 70,000 veteran households find housing, access counseling, secure employment, and navigate health and social services across the state. In the most recent funding year (July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025), the network received 35,308 calls, served 7,790 clients, and completed 3,405 Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (CSSRS) screenings – demonstrating the ongoing and growing need for accessible, coordinated care.

The expanded partnership between Vaya and ABCCM means that beginning Nov. 11, Veterans Day, the NCServes call line and coordination center will offer extended hours to meet veterans where they are and reduce barriers to care. These expanded hours, including evenings and weekends, make it easier for veterans and their families to connect to care when they need it most. Veterans, service members, and their families in need of housing, transportation, physical and mental health care, employment services and other resources are encouraged to call 855-962-8387 o visite www.ncserves.org to connect with the care coordination teams.

“At Vaya, we recognize that service to others doesn’t end when military service does,” said Tracy Hayes, Area Director and CEO of Vaya Health. “North Carolina’s veterans have given so much for our state and our nation, and it’s our responsibility to ensure they have access to the care, connection, and community support they deserve. Through strong partnerships like NCServes, we’re building a coordinated system that honors their service by meeting their needs with dignity and compassion.”

“This platform marks another milestone in the evolution of NCServes and how North Carolina continues to raise the standard in serving our veterans and their families,” said Brandon Wilson, Chief Operating Officer of ABCCM. “This expansion reflects what’s possible when more than 5,000 community-based organizations work together with support from our state with purpose. This is intentional community in action and a powerful example of how coordination and compassion can directly transform lives across our state.”

By connecting veterans to therapy, substance use treatment, or housing stability services, Vaya’s approach centers on restoring hope, safety, and long-term support.

The NCServes partnership is one way that Vaya strives to be a key partner for veterans in crisis, ensuring they are met with compassion and are provided objective steps to meet their immediate needs. Vaya also offers training programs that help community members and professionals better understand and assist veterans. Equipping participants to recognize signs of distress is essential to connecting veterans with appropriate care. Trainings include:

  • Primeros auxilios en salud mental
  • QPR Prevención del suicidio
  • Formación del Equipo de Intervención en Crisis (CIT)

Vaya’s commitment to accessible, person-centered behavioral health care promotes community awareness and ensures veterans receive timely mental health assessments, crisis response, and follow-up support tailored to their individual circumstances.
