ICYMI: Vaya Health Joins Celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month at Executive Mansion in Raleigh

In recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), Angela Canada, Vaya Health’s Transition to Community Living (TCL) supported employment specialist, along with a TCL and Individual Placement and Support (IPS-SE) participant and his parents, had the opportunity to attend a special reception at the Executive Mansion in Raleigh.

Hosted by Gov. Josh Stein, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), and the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities, the event marked the 80th anniversary of NDEAM and celebrated the contributions of workers with disabilities across the state.

Gov. Stein signed a proclamation, both in English and in Braille, recognizing October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month in North Carolina. The ceremony showcased how individuals with disabilities are thriving in meaningful careers and how employers across the state are helping make inclusive employment a reality.

As part of her role as Vaya’s TCL benefits counselor, Angela helps TCL members connect with IPS-SE to find opportunities that align with their skills and interests while also addressing any concerns with their benefits. Her participation in the state-level event reflects Vaya’s ongoing commitment to empowering individuals through employment and community inclusion.

“Employment is a key social determinant of health and wellbeing for working-age adults, including those with disabilities. Seeing so many people and organizations, and state partners committed to inclusive employment was incredibly inspiring,” said Angela. “Every individual deserves the chance to contribute their talents and feel valued in the workplace, and I’m grateful to play a small part in helping make that possible.”

For more than a century, North Carolina’s Division of Employment and Independence for People with Disabilities (formerly known as Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services) has helped people with disabilities explore, prepare for, and sustain competitive employment. Initiatives like Inclusion Works, Project Spark, Bridge to Success, and IPS-SE continue to expand opportunities for individuals to succeed in jobs they enjoy within their communities.

Vaya values the opportunity to be part of this effort to support members as they overcome barriers, connect with career opportunities, and make valuable contributions to the state’s workforce.
