Brain Injury Awareness Month at Vaya Health

Each March, Brain Injury Awareness Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness, challenge misconceptions, and strengthen systems that support individuals living with traumatic and acquired brain injuries across North Carolina.

At Vaya Health, this work is personal. It is rooted in our mission to ensure people receive the services and support they need to live their best lives. That commitment extends beyond direct care into statewide leadership and policy.

In 2024, Governor Josh Stein appointed Tracy Hayes, Vaya Health Area Director and CEO, to serve as Vice Chair of the North Carolina Brain Injury Advisory Council. The council serves as a statewide advisory body focused on traumatic brain injury and other acquired brain injuries. It looks at the causes and effects of brain injuries in North Carolina and gives advice to the state leaders on how to plan, fund, and provide services across the state to help people with brain injuries. Council members include service providers, advocates, family members, and state representatives. The council’s responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing issues related to brain injury definitions and services
  • Studying the needs of individuals living with brain injury and their families
  • Promoting coordination among state agencies that provide support
  • Making recommendations to the Governor, the General Assembly and the Secretary of Health and Human Services

As Vice Chair, Hayes helps guide discussions and recommendations related to planning, funding, and development of a coordinated statewide support system. Her participation ensures representation in these important conversations for the voices of members, providers, and communities served by Vaya.

Through her leadership on the council, Hayes contributes to statewide efforts to address challenges facing individuals and families living with brain injury, reinforcing Vaya’s ongoing commitment to whole-person care.

North Carolina has expanded awareness of screening tools and support systems designed to help individuals identify possible brain injury and connect with appropriate resources. Online screening tools are available through NC BRAINS, an initiative led by Disability Rights North Carolina, help individuals better understand their symptoms and determine next steps.

For those who qualify, Vaya offers services and supports for individuals living with traumatic brain injury and other qualifying conditions. Vaya’s care coordination approach helps members navigate services, connect with providers, and access needed support.
