Vaya Health Promoting Free Community Classes on Suicide Prevention and Mental Health

Vaya Health is partnering with local organizations to offer free community classes and training programs. These programs, including Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) and Mental Health First Aid, are designed to make mental health and suicide prevention education as accessible as CPR training.

Suicide prevention efforts have become increasingly critical in local communities, especially in rural areas, where suicide rates are higher than those in North Carolina overall. Vaya’s QPR and Mental Health First Aid classes are led by certified trainers. QPR participants learn how to recognize the signs of a suicide crisis, develop strategies for effective intervention, and connect with behavioral health resources. Mental Health First Aid participants learn to help people experiencing a behavioral health crisis, or developing a mental health or substance use problem, using a five-step action plan.

Classes are held throughout Vaya’s region and are open to people of all ages, free of cost. Providing critical education, training, and outreach helps strengthen communities, equipping individuals with the tools they need to reach out for help for themselves and others.

Vaya’s commitment to suicide prevention reflects its broader mission to advance whole-person health care in North Carolina.
