PATH 4 Week Pilot Suicide Prevention in Yancey County High School

There have been some recent events in Yancey County where mental health resources and intervention is a heightened need and requested by the community. Therefore, PATH and a few other community stakeholders have been meeting to discuss creating an initiative similar to the Icelandic Prevention Model (IPM) to help build resilience and reduce risk through developing structured, leisure activities in the community hosted and supported by community stakeholders, mentors, parents, and other invested adults.
They have created a program for Yancey County high schoolers that would meet once a week during a 4-week period. The pilot aims to help reduce the risk of suicidal ideation and increase the prosocial and protective factors of students in Yancey County. There will be cultural, social, and artistic opportunities for participants to freely express themselves. Slam poetry is an example of an activity planned to help with building trust and communication with the participants to lead into wellness topics, mental health conversations, and more.
