Steve Martin

Steve Martin is an experienced leader in health care law. As General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Vaya Health, Martin oversees legal, compliance, quality, communications, marketing, and public affairs activity.

Prior to joining Vaya, Martin served as General Counsel for Cardinal Innovations Healthcare. His responsibilities spanned all legal and regulatory aspects of the organization, from vendor contracting and provider credentialing to privacy and security issues and litigation. Martin served as a trusted advisor to the CEO and executive leadership on the organization’s contracts with NCDHHS. His legal and business acumen helped Cardinal successfully navigate annual external quality reviews, state audits, and two NCQA accreditation renewals. He also played a key role in the organization’s successful response to NCDHHS’ request for application to operate a Behavioral Health and I/DD Tailored Plan.

Martin’s path to health care law began with research and development of litigation strategy on Medicare reimbursement disputes for hospitals and health care providers. Later, as a partner in  the health care group at Nelson Mullins, he represented both payor and provider clients in federal and state courts. Previous pro bono work includes serving as appellate Guardian ad Litem in parental rights cases and counsel for disabled Veterans in the US Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.  

Martin obtained his undergraduate degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and his juris doctorate from Northwestern University School of Law. He is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association.
